How to Update Volkswagen Navigation Maps (MIB2, MIB3, Discover Pro)

Step-by-step guide to updating Volkswagen navigation maps for MIB2, MIB3, Discover Media and Discover Pro systems. Works for Golf, Passat, Tiguan, Polo, T-Roc, Touareg and more. No dealer needed.

Volkswagen Guides··4 min read

Volkswagen navigation systems use the same MIB platform as Audi and SEAT, which means the update process is well-documented and fully DIY. No dealer visit, no expensive service appointment.

This guide covers MIB2, MIB3, Discover Media, and Discover Pro systems across all major VW models.

First — identify your navigation system

Go to: Menu → Settings → System information

| System | Vehicles | Update method | |--------|----------|--------------| | MIB2 Discover Media | Golf 7 (2013–2019), Polo AW (2017+), T-Roc (2017+), Tiguan AD (2016+) | SD card | | MIB2 Discover Pro | Golf 7 R-Line, Passat B8 (2015+), Tiguan (high trim) | SD card | | MIB3 | Golf 8 (2020+), Polo AW (2021+), T-Cross, Taigo | USB or OTA | | RNS510 | Older Golf 6, Passat B6/B7, Tiguan (pre-2016) | DVD or SD |

Not sure which you have? Contact us with your VW model and year and we'll confirm.

MIB2 update (SD card method)

  1. Note your current map version: Menu → Navigation → Map version
  2. Get the correct SD card update for your system and region from mapcoding.io/brands/volkswagen
  3. Insert SD card into the upper slot of your infotainment unit
  4. The update wizard launches automatically
  5. Keep the engine running — takes 45–90 minutes
  6. Do not remove the card until the system confirms completion

MIB3 update (USB method)

  1. Format USB drive to FAT32 (minimum 16GB)
  2. Download the .nav update file and copy to USB root — not inside any folder
  3. Plug into the front USB-A port
  4. Go to: Menu → Navigation → Map update → USB
  5. Confirm and wait — takes 30–60 minutes

Discover Pro update (SD card)

The Discover Pro uses a larger map package than standard MIB2 Discover Media. You need:

  • SD card minimum 32GB
  • Correct region file (Western Europe, Eastern Europe, or Full Europe)

Process is the same as MIB2 above. Make sure you select "Discover Pro" specifically when ordering — the file is different from standard MIB2.

Common questions

"My VW says navigation is not available" This usually means the navigation licence has expired or was never activated. You need an activation code specific to your unit — contact us with your VIN and we can sort this.

"Will updating maps reset my settings?" No. Your radio presets, Bluetooth pairings, and system settings stay intact after a map update.

"Can I add Apple CarPlay to my VW if it doesn't have it?" On MIB3 cars (Golf 8, Polo 2021+) CarPlay can be activated via software coding — no hardware needed. On MIB2 cars it depends on the head unit variant. See CarPlay activation →

"What's the difference between Discover Media and Discover Pro?" Discover Media is the standard system with a smaller screen. Discover Pro has a larger touchscreen, higher resolution maps, and gesture control on some models. Both use SD card updates but require different map files.

"My VW is showing roads that don't exist or missing new roads" This is the most common sign your maps are outdated. European map databases are updated 2–3 times per year — if your car is more than 2 years old without an update, you're likely missing significant road changes.
