Mercedes-Benz navigation systems are among the most capable in the segment — but map updates can cost hundreds at a dealer. The good news is the process is fully DIY and takes about an hour.
This guide covers COMAND Online, NTG4, NTG5, NTG5.1, NTG6, and MBUX systems.
First — identify your Mercedes navigation system
Go to: COMAND → System → Version information
| System | Vehicles | Update method | |--------|----------|--------------| | NTG4 | C-Class W204, E-Class W212, GLK X204 (2008–2014) | SD card | | NTG4.5 | C-Class W204 (2011+), E-Class W212 (2013+) | SD card | | NTG5 | C-Class W205, E-Class W213, GLC X253 (2014–2018) | SD card | | NTG5.1 | GLE W166, GLS X166, S-Class W222 (2015–2019) | SD card | | NTG6 / COMAND Online | E-Class W213 (2016+), S-Class W222 (2017+) | USB | | MBUX | A-Class W177, B-Class W247, CLA C118 (2018+) | OTA or USB |
Your system version is also shown in the COMAND display under System → About.
NTG4 / NTG5 update (SD card method)
- Note your current map version: COMAND → Navigation → Map information
- Get the correct SD card for your NTG version and region from mapcoding.io/brands/mercedes
- Insert SD card into the SD slot (usually on the side of the COMAND unit or in the glovebox)
- COMAND detects the card automatically and prompts for update
- Confirm and keep engine running — takes 60–90 minutes
- System restarts automatically when complete
NTG6 update (USB method)
- Format USB drive to FAT32 (minimum 32GB — NTG6 files are large)
- Copy the map update package to USB root
- Insert into the USB port in the centre console or glovebox
- COMAND → Navigation → Map update
- Follow on-screen confirmation steps
- Takes 60–120 minutes — do not turn off the engine
MBUX update
MBUX supports over-the-air updates when connected to mobile data or WiFi. If OTA is unavailable in your region:
- Download the MBUX map package
- Copy to USB (FAT32, 32GB+)
- Connect to car USB
- Settings → System → Software update → USB
- Takes approximately 45–90 minutes
Common questions
"Mercedes dealer wants €300–400 for a map update — is DIY really the same quality?" Yes. The map files are identical — sourced from HERE Maps which is the same supplier Mercedes uses. The difference is we don't charge dealer labour rates.
"My COMAND shows 'No map data available'" Your maps may be expired or the SD card may have been removed. Insert a valid map SD card and COMAND will recognise it immediately.
"Can I add Apple CarPlay to my Mercedes?" On MBUX-equipped cars (2018+) CarPlay is either factory fitted or can be activated. On older COMAND systems a retrofit is required. Contact us with your model and year for specific advice.
"What about Video in Motion — can I enable it?" Yes — on most COMAND and NTG5+ systems Video in Motion (VIM) can be enabled via coding. This allows video playback on the screen while driving. See Video in Motion activation →
"My Mercedes is a US import — can I get EU maps?" Yes — we offer region conversion for US-spec Mercedes vehicles to EU specification, followed by EU map installation. See region conversion →
"Which SD card size do I need?"
- NTG4: 4GB minimum
- NTG5/5.1: 8GB minimum
- NTG6: 32GB USB minimum
