What is a BMW FSC code?
FSC stands for Feature Software Code. It is a vehicle-specific licence key that unlocks navigation functionality on BMW and Mini iDrive systems.
Think of it as a software licence — the navigation hardware is already built into your head unit, but it needs an FSC code to activate. Without it, iDrive either shows no maps at all or prompts you to enter an activation code.
FSC codes are:
- VIN-specific — tied to your car's 17-character VIN, not transferable to another vehicle
- Head unit specific — different format for NBT, EVO ID4/ID5/ID6, and MGU systems
- Permanent — once entered, navigation stays active
When do you need a BMW FSC code?
You need an FSC code if:
- iDrive shows "Navigation not licensed" or "Please enter activation code"
- Your BMW has a navigation screen but no maps appear
- You retrofitted a navigation head unit into a car that didn't come with nav
- You replaced a faulty head unit with a second-hand unit
- Your navigation licence expired (older NBT units used time-limited licences)
- You imported a BMW from a region where navigation was not activated
You do NOT need an FSC code if:
- Navigation works but maps are just outdated — you need a map update instead
- iDrive opens navigation but shows old roads — that's a map version issue, not a licence issue
How to check if your BMW needs an FSC code
- Press the iDrive controller and go to Navigation
- If navigation opens normally → you don't need an FSC code, you may need a map update
- If you see "Navigation not available", "Licence required", or an activation prompt → you need an FSC code

- FSC is delivered as an encrypted file loaded via USB
- How to enter: Copy FSC file to USB root → iDrive → Software update → USB
- The system reads and applies the code automatically
EVO ID5 / ID6 — 2019–2022
Models: BMW 3 Series G20/G21, 5 Series G30 (late), X5 G05, X6 G06, X7 G07, M3 G80, M4 G82
- Same USB file method as EVO ID4
- Requires matching FSC file generated for your exact VIN and software version
MGU (Live Cockpit Professional) — 2022+

How to get a BMW FSC code
To generate a valid FSC code you need:
- Your VIN — 17-character code found on the dashboard (visible through windscreen), door frame sticker, or vehicle documents
- Your head unit type — NBT, EVO ID4, EVO ID5/ID6, or MGU (check iDrive → System → Version information)
- Current software version — shown in the same Version information screen

How to enter a BMW FSC code
NBT systems (16-character code):
- Go to iDrive → Settings → Software update → Enter activation code
- Use the iDrive controller to enter the 16-character FSC code

- Restart iDrive if prompted
EVO ID4 / ID5 / ID6 systems (USB file method):
- Format a USB drive to FAT32
- Copy the FSC file to the USB root (not inside any folder)
- Insert USB into the BMW USB port

Common FSC code questions
How long does it take to receive my FSC code? Typically within 1 hour of ordering. Complex or older VINs may take slightly longer. You receive the code or file by email.
My FSC code isn't working — what do I do? The most common reason is a mismatch between the FSC and your current iDrive software version. Contact us with your VIN and software version string and we'll diagnose it.
Can I use the same FSC code on a different BMW? No. FSC codes are cryptographically tied to your VIN. A code generated for one car will not work on another.
Does entering an FSC code void my warranty? No. Entering a valid FSC code is a standard software activation — the same process BMW dealers use. It leaves no trace and does not affect your warranty.
My BMW came with navigation but it stopped working after a software update This happens occasionally when a major iDrive software update resets licences. You'll need a new FSC code matched to the updated software version. Contact us with your current software version.
Do I need a new FSC code every time I update my maps? No. The FSC code activates navigation permanently. Map updates are separate and do not require a new FSC code.
What's the difference between an FSC code and a map update?
