Apple CarPlay is one of the most wanted features in modern cars — and if your BMW, Audi, Mercedes, VW or Porsche didn't come with it from the factory, there's a good chance you can add it without replacing any hardware.
This guide explains how CarPlay activation works, which cars are compatible, and what the process involves.
How does CarPlay activation work?
On newer infotainment systems, Apple CarPlay is built into the head unit hardware but locked at the software level. The car manufacturer charges extra for it as an option — but the capability is already there.
A CarPlay activation unlocks it via software coding — no hardware installation, no dashboard disassembly, no dealer visit.
This works on:
- BMW EVO ID4, EVO ID5, EVO ID6 systems
- Audi MIB3 systems
- Mercedes MBUX systems
- Volkswagen MIB3 systems
- Porsche PCM 6.0 systems
It does NOT work on older systems (BMW NBT, Audi MIB2, Mercedes NTG5 and earlier) — those require a hardware retrofit which is a different process.
BMW Apple CarPlay activation
Compatible systems:
- EVO ID4 → BMW 5 Series G30, X3 G01, X5 G05 (2017–2019)
- EVO ID5/ID6 → BMW 3 Series G20, X5 G05, X7 G07 (2019–2022)
- MGU → BMW 5 Series G60, 7 Series G70 (2022+)
How to check if your BMW is compatible: Go to iDrive → Settings → General settings → If you see "Apple CarPlay" greyed out or missing, your car needs activation.

- Full iPhone mirroring via CarPlay interface
- Siri integration through iDrive controls
- Works alongside existing iDrive navigation
After activation: plug in your iPhone via USB-C or USB-A, or connect wirelessly if your head unit supports it.
Audi Apple CarPlay activation
Compatible systems:
- MIB3 → Audi A3 8Y, A4 B9 (2019+), Q5 FY (2021+), RS3, RS5
How to check if your Audi is compatible: MMI → Settings → System information → If your software version shows MIB3, you are compatible.
MIB2 cars (A3 8V, A4 B9 pre-2019): CarPlay requires a hardware module — contact us for options.

Mercedes-Benz Apple CarPlay activation
Compatible systems:
- MBUX → A-Class W177, B-Class W247, CLA C118, GLA X247 (2018+)
- NTG6 → E-Class W213 (2016+), S-Class W222 (2017+)
How to check: COMAND → Settings → If CarPlay appears as inactive or locked, activation is possible.
Older COMAND systems (NTG5 and earlier): Hardware retrofit required — not a software activation.

- Full MBUX CarPlay integration
- Wireless CarPlay on compatible MBUX hardware
- Works alongside Mercedes native navigation and Hey Mercedes voice control

Compatible systems:
- PCM 6.0 → Cayenne (2018+), Panamera (2017+), Macan (2019+), 911 (992)
- PCM 5.0 → some older Cayenne and Panamera models
How to check: PCM → Options → If CarPlay appears locked or inactive, activation is possible.
What the activation includes:
- Full PCM CarPlay integration
- Wireless CarPlay on PCM 6.0

How long does activation take? The activation file is delivered to your email within 1–2 hours of ordering. Installation in the car takes 15–30 minutes following the included guide.
Will it void my warranty? Software activation via coding is reversible and leaves no physical trace. However we recommend checking your specific warranty terms if your car is still under manufacturer warranty.
Does wireless CarPlay work after activation? On compatible hardware (most EVO ID5/ID6, MBUX, MIB3 and PCM 6.0 units) — yes. On older hardware that only supports wired connections, wired CarPlay is activated.
Can I use Android Auto instead? Android Auto activation is also available for compatible systems. Contact us to confirm compatibility with your specific car.
